It was one of those afternoons where the heat seemed to seep through the windows, making everyone just a little more irritable than usual. I was paced back and forth in the kitchen, my phone pressed to my ear, locked in a circular, exhausting argument with my mother. Every time I thought we had reached a resolution, she would find a new way to pick at an old wound.
Finally, my patience snapped. I didn’t just say it; I bellowed it toward the ceiling as if the universe itself needed to hear: “I don’t want to talk to you right now!”.
The silence that followed should have been a relief. Instead, it was interrupted by the cheerful, mechanical “bloop” of the smart speaker sitting on the kitchen counter. Its LED ring pulsed with a vibrant blue light.
“Okay,” the AI voice chirped with terrifying efficiency. “Calling Mother-in-Law“.
My blood turned to ice. I lunged across the linoleum, my hands wet from the dishes I’d abandoned, desperately trying to find the “Mute” or “End Call” button. But it was too late. The speaker was already projecting a loud, crystal-clear ringing tone that filled the room.
“Hello? Sarah?” My mother-in-law’s voice crackled through the speaker, sounding confused and slightly concerned. “Is everything all right? You sound like you’re… screaming?”
I froze, one hand hovering over the speaker, the other still holding my actual phone where my own mother was undoubtedly listening with breathless interest. I had to explain why I was mid-meltdown, shouting about personal boundaries and the need for space, to a woman who—for once—had actually done absolutely nothing wrong.
