The smell of roasted turkey and rosemary hit me the second I stepped out of my car. I\u2019d driven six hours, skipped a lucrative holiday shift at work, and brought three bottles of expensive wine. But before I could even reach the porch, the front door creaked open.<\/p>\n

My Uncle Marcus stepped out, crossing his arms. He didn’t offer a hug or even a “Happy Thanksgiving.”<\/p>\n

“You can head back, Ryan,” he said, his voice flat. “We decided to keep it to the ‘inner circle’ this year. You weren\u2019t invited. Go home.”<\/p>\n

I looked past him through the large bay window. There they were. My mother was pouring wine, my sister was showing off her new engagement ring, and sitting right next to her was Leo\u2014my best friend since kindergarten. They were all laughing. The table was set for twelve, and one chair was conspicuously empty, yet clearly not for me.<\/p>\n

“I see,” I said. My heart felt like it had been dropped in liquid nitrogen, but I kept my face steady. “No problem, Marcus. Enjoy the dinner.”<\/p>\n

I got back in my car, but I didn’t start the engine. I pulled out my phone and made a single call to my company\u2019s 24-hour dispatch line.<\/p>\n

“Hey, it’s Ryan,” I said. “I\u2019m at my family\u2019s property. Regarding the ‘Family Share’ network and the enterprise-grade Wi-Fi mesh I installed last month? Pull the plug. I took a bite of my burger and typed a single response to the family group chat:<\/p>\n

I turned my phone off and finished my meal in the most beautiful silence I\u2019ve ever heard.
