This happened on an ordinary morning, and I still can’t stop thinking about it.

I was taking a bath with music playing when I heard my dogs barking downstairs.

At first, I ignored it.

Then I heard a scream.

Not an ordinary child’s scream. A blood-curdling scream that made my entire body go cold.

I jumped out of the bathtub, wrapped a towel around myself, and ran downstairs.

What I saw in my living room stopped me in my tracks.

A little girl, probably five or six years old, was on the floor.

My Dachshund had her pant leg in his mouth and was biting and pulling at her ankles.

I shouted for him to stop and immediately separated him from the child.

The little girl was crying uncontrollably. There was blood around her ankles and visible bite wounds on her legs and backside.

I had never seen her before.

I grabbed a towel, called emergency services, and tried to keep her calm while asking where she lived.

Between her sobs, she managed to tell me the street and point toward a house nearby.

I threw on some clothes and stayed with her while help was arranged. Once I knew medical assistance was on its way, I contacted the number on the emergency call and explained that I had found the child injured inside my home.

When I reached the house she had described, a woman opened the door.

“Is this your daughter?” I asked, struggling to keep my voice steady.

The woman’s face went pale.

“Oh my God! Emily!”

She rushed toward the little girl.

I explained what had happened, how I had heard the scream, found her on my living room floor, and separated my dog.

The mother looked at me in disbelief.

“How did she get inside your house?”

I didn’t know.

She said she had been inside the house for only a few minutes and thought her daughter was playing in the backyard.

But the little girl had apparently wandered away without anyone noticing.

The ambulance arrived, and the paramedics examined her injuries before taking her for medical treatment. I gave them the details of what I had witnessed and made sure her mother had my contact information.

I also contacted animal control and followed their instructions regarding the dog and the bite report.

Later that afternoon, the girl’s mother came to speak with me.

She was still shaken.

“I can’t thank you enough for finding her,” she said. “I don’t even want to think about what could have happened if you hadn’t heard her.”

I told her I was just glad the child had received medical attention.

But there was something else I needed to say.

“My dog hurt your daughter. I’m taking that seriously. I will cooperate with the investigation and follow every safety requirement.”

She nodded.

Neither of us knew exactly how the little girl had entered my house, but we both understood that the situation could never be allowed to happen again.

That evening, I sat in my living room looking at the spot where I had found her.

I kept replaying the scream in my head.

I was angry that a child had been hurt. I was frightened by how quickly everything had happened. And I knew I had responsibilities to make sure my dog could not put another child at risk.

My Dachshund had always been small, but I had learned that size doesn’t make a dog incapable of causing serious injuries.

The little girl was receiving care, the authorities had been informed, and I was taking steps to secure my home and address what happened with my dog.

I never expected my morning to unfold like that.

But one thing will stay with me forever:

A child should never have to scream for help inside someone else’s house before an adult realizes something is wrong.
