“Where did he tell you to hide?”<\/p>\n

The little girl pointed toward the window.<\/p>\n

“Outside.”<\/p>\n

Her mother covered her mouth.<\/p>\n

I felt a chill run through me.<\/p>\n

The child had apparently wandered through neighboring yards, eventually finding a way into my unlocked back door.<\/p>\n

But there was still one question.<\/p>\n

Why had her father told her to hide?<\/p>\n

The mother called the police.<\/p>\n

Within minutes, officers arrived.<\/p>\n

They spoke with the mother first.<\/p>\n

Then they spoke with me.<\/p>\n

My dog had reacted to the unfamiliar person in the house.<\/p>\n

The situation could have ended much worse.<\/p>\n

Thankfully, once the adults arrived, the little girl was taken for proper medical attention and reunited with her mother.<\/p>\n

But the story didn’t end there.<\/p>\n

That evening, the girl’s mother came back to my house.<\/p>\n

She was holding a small drawing.<\/p>\n

“This is for you.”<\/p>\n

I looked at it.<\/p>\n

It was a picture of a little girl standing beside a dog.<\/p>\n

Above them was a large yellow sun.<\/p>\n

At the bottom, in uneven handwriting, were the words:<\/p>\n

“Thank you for finding me.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

I looked at her.<\/p>\n

“You don’t have to thank me.”<\/p>\n

She shook her head.<\/p>\n

“Yes, I do.”<\/p>\n

She explained that her daughter had been terrified when she ran away.<\/p>\n

But when I found her, I didn’t yell.<\/p>\n

I didn’t blame her.<\/p>\n

I didn’t ask why she had entered my home.<\/p>\n

I simply helped her.<\/p>\n

I looked at the drawing again.<\/p>\n

That morning, I had been annoyed that my peaceful bath had been interrupted.<\/p>\n
